It is a good idea to have your Scooter or Powerchair serviced annually or more if it’s really heavy usage. A complete service that I carry out takes about an hour or so. Manufacturer guidelines differ so if you have a handbook go with their advice. When I Service a Scooter I check the batteries with a special meter that will tell me if they are healthy or not, I only replace batteries when essential due to the high cost involved. Some companies are currently promoting Gel batteries claiming they are better, there is no right or wrong however different usage requirements mean different battery types. I will discuss with you what you use the scooter for and how often and come up with the best option for you. When you last had your batteries replaced or your scooter/Chair serviced did anyone ask you about your usage?
Next we check the motor and brushes if fitted. Motor brushes are a key component on the scooter, if they are worn or clogged up it will affect the running of it.
The transaxle is then checked to see if there are any signs of leaking oil, noise and amp draw.
The wiring is checked to make sure there is no damage or corrosion.
The wheels are removed to clear out any debris that may have accumulated. It amazing the amount of hair etc that can build up behind the wheels! We also check the ‘key way’ is in correctly as an ill fitting one can lead to the rear wheels becoming loose and in severe cases fall off.
The Frame is checked for any corrosion.
We check all the nuts and bolts are tight and secure.
All steering rods and shock absorbers are checked to make sure they are working correctly and then lubricated where necessary. I have seen that some companies spray white grease all over the steering rods and suspension, this is rarely needed as most have nylon bushes that need no grease. All the grease does is collect dirt and grit causing it to get into the linkage causing more wear! If possible take a look at your scooter or Powerchair and see if it’s covered in white grease, if it is then it’s possibly attracting dirt and grit .
Wheel alignment is checked.
Tyres, tread depth and tyre pressures on pneumatic tyres are all checked for condition and the correct pressure. Also check the bolts are tight on the rims.
Horn, lights and indicators where fitted are all checked to make sure they are functioning properly.
The seat and fittings are checked and greased where applicable.
This is an overview and each item is different so there may be more or less on certain items. Whilst carrying out the above we will be looking to see if everything is as it should be.
